Terri L. Shelton, Ph.D. is Professor Emerita and Executive Director of Spartan Strategies, Inc., a support organization to advance innovation at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where she previously served as the Vice Chancellor for Research and Engagement and held the Carol Jenkins Mattocks Distinguished Professorship. While at UNCG, Dr. Shelton oversaw the establishment of North Carolina’s first and still only 4-year certificate post-secondary education program for students with intellectual disabilities. She is a founding member and serves on the Executive Board of the Institute for Patient and Family Centered Care, which advances the understanding and practice of patient- and family-centered care in partnership with patients, families, and health care professionals, integrating these concepts into all aspects of health care. Her research has focused on bridging research, policy and evidence-based practice to create partnerships that build the capacity of communities, families and youth, service providers, researchers and policymakers. She has secured over $50 million in external funding and has authored over 75 publications including co-author of the books Assessing Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Family-Centered Care for Children Needing Specialized Developmental Services. She was named one of 2017’s Outstanding Women in Business by the Triad Business Journal and was honored in 2018 by the State of North Carolina with a Family Driven-System of Care Lifetime Achievement Award. She has also received the Hiram E. Fitzgerald Distinguished Engaged Scholar Award in 2022 from the national Engagement Scholarship Consortium; the Athena International Leadership Award in 2023 from the Chamber of Commerce recognizing professional excellence in improving the quality of life for others in their communities; and in 2024, the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the highest service award granted by the Governor of North Carolina.
