Dr. Laura Hennis Besecker is a consultant for development and facilitation of the ACCESS Program (Accessing Campus Connections and Empowering Student Success), where she participates in curriculum development and adaptations of ACCESS in an on-line setting; provides direct delivery of ACCESS skills groups; and supervises graduate student trainees who mentor ACCESS participants on their university campuses. Dr. Besecker earned her B.S. in Psychology from Duke University, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG).
Throughout her graduate training, under the direction of Dr. Arthur D. Anastopoulos, she engaged in extensive specialty training in the treatment and assessment of ADHD with all ages. Her graduate research focused on resilience factors in individuals with ADHD, which makes her current work fostering the success of college students with ADHD exciting to see in action. Dr. Besecker completed her pre-doctoral internship in pediatric psychology at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. She returned to UNCG where she taught and served as Clinic Director for the UNCG Psychology Clinic, a community clinic and graduate training site. Dr. Besecker's interest in ADHD specialty work led to a return to the ADHD Clinic at UNCG where she served as Associate Clinic Director and staff psychologist, primarily working with college students. She helped develop and later served as director for the North Carolina Summer Treatment Program for Kids (NCSPK), an evidence-based comprehensive intervention for children with ADHD. She was also a research associate for the Trajectories Related to ADHD in College (TRAC) Project, a longitudinal study of ADHD in college students. Dr. Besecker was involved in the open clinical trial examining the ACCESS program, initially serving as mentor for students enrolled in the program and then later as a project coordinator and mentor supervisor for other mentors. Dr. Besecker co-authored the treatment manual for the ACCESS program now published in 3 languages, with a special focus on the mentoring components. In addition to her work with the ACCESS program, Dr. Besecker is currently an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Elon University.
